M24 Burials
Churchyard No3 is the centre part of the large cemetery to the South of the Church. It is surrounded on 3 sides by Middleton Old Cemetery.
When Churchyard No2 was becoming full, the church obtained a former bowling green on land known as "The Warren". This area was predominately flat but sloped down on 3 sides. The Churchyard is edged by tarmac paths to the main square, but some columns extend to the North Wall.
The land was consecrated on October 20th 1826 and the first 2 burials took place on October 24th (Both in unmarked plots)
When looking at plans of Cemetery 3 there are 3 sets of numbers.
The first two numbers indicate the column and row, and the 3rd number is always 3, indicating Cemetery No3. Plot 01-01-3 is in the South East corner 01-02-3 is the next plot northwards continuing to 01-29-3 in the North West corner. On column 1 the graves are in a North/South orientation.
Columns 2 to 7 have 58 plots and the graves are orientated East/West.
Column 8 has 69 Plots and columns 9 to 20 have between 82 and 85 plots (with the exception of column 16, which only has 67 (or 68, depending on which set of records you look at!)
Column 21 has 69 plots, 22 to 28 have 50 to 58, 29 has 42 and 30 (where the graves are orientated North/South) has 29.
The reason that columns 8 and 21 have fewer plots is that as you cross the path, the grave orientation changes to North/South to mark the boundary of Churchyard No 3.
The reason column 16 has a lower number of graves than the others, is it that this row meets the entrance path
The layout is shown below. When looking for a grave, start at the South-East corner, and count the Columns, then enter the yard itself and count the rows. Please note that all graves are numbered, including unmarked plots, so empty spaces must be counted.
