M24 Burials
In the early 1900's the burial board knew that remaining space at Middleton and Thornham Cemetery was becoming scarce, so much so that in 1904, an additional section to the south of the Bamford Memorial was made available for new plots (Section FF). Work started on finding a suitable area for the construction of a new Cemetery. In early 1909 the Boarshaw estate was purchased my Middleton council and plans were made for the new cemetery.
The first burial was November 7th 1912.
The burial records are available on microfilm and it is planned
to transcribe these over the winter months.
The site also includes memorial kerb plaques available to
commemorate those who have been cremated. Grave plots are purchased
"In perpetuity" but kerb plaques are renewable after a period, if
not renewed, the plaque may be removed and replaced. For this reason
it is not intended to record these plaques.
A general layout plan is shown below, Details of each section and the numbering of graves will be added at a later date.
Within the grave register, Section B is followed by Section Z, then Section D. It is likely that Sections Z, Y and the small parking area were originally designated as Section C.
As well as the sections below, the grave register also records burials in Section H. The appears to be an area set aside for public burials so it is unlikely there will be any burial markers. Further research will be required to ascertain the location of this section.
